Lightning Protection
Benjamin Franklin is credited as the inventor of lightning rods,
which remains today the basic equipment used in lightning
protection. The lightning rods are connected to the ground and thus
earthed. The principle is that through the making of a small bleeder
discharge from the ground to the cloud would be enough to prevent a
lightning strike.
Nowadays, lightning protection involve more than just lightning
rods. It involves the protection of appliances from damage through a
transient electricity surge that in severe cases can lead to fire.
It also involves the detection of lightning so that events can be
postponed and cancelled if required.
